Having Individual Opinions

One of my friends ask me one day, “Have you become a leftist?” I was amazed by how much but people/things under label because we seek to control. I jokingly said, “ya, maybe. I guess”. The problem is I don’t define myself as a left-wing believer or a right-wing believer. I don’t get it. Am I supposed o be one of the two? Can’t I believe in a bit of both? Although, I don’t really agree with the right-wing political ideas.
I believe, the views of a particular individual are formed by the presence around them. By their parents, their friends and anyone with who they surround themselves. So, I guess I could be a leftist because my parents have views that ain’t very right-wing. After all, ever since a child, I have seen them questioning laws, policies, politicians and each other.
I don’t find any harm in believing in social equality and egalitarianism. I mean, if you believe in equality and how everyone deserves equal rights, you possibly ain’t wrong. I don’t understand why people think it’s a bad thing. Are they scared of equality? Are they scared their privilege would be banished if others get equality? What really is their problem?
Do they even know that some of the extreme right-wing tendencies were applied in the most bizarre and historically saddening movements including fascism, nazism and racial supremacy? My problem is the right-wing believed to support religion and nationalism blindly. They wouldn’t hear a word against an atheist or anyone who believes that society requires adjustments or changes. They are so rigid with their beliefs and so blinded by political agendas; they don’t understand how these ideas cannot thrive in the modern world.
And no, I am not an anti-nationalist or a non-believer. I just feel like my country is flawed, like all others, and we are supposed to make it better and give it space for change. What good has come out of rigid beliefs, anyway? I believe people should mould their beliefs as a potter’s hand mould the clay because it would only lead to the overall development of the individual and one shouldn’t really be stuck on which ideas they believe in, for opinions can change with an increase in knowledge.
Maybe I am a leftist, or maybe I am not. But, I firmly believe in movements like feminism, environmental and civic rights movements, social democracy, equality and various other things associated with it because I feel they are important. It doesn’t mean that I won’t respect another individual’s opinions, and it doesn’t mean my opinions ain’t liable to change. That’s what makes us human, right? The fact that we are constantly evolving.
